Poet to teach tolerance

Poet to teach tolerance

By Tinashe Sibanda

THE country’s longest running poetry platform, House of Hunger Poetry Slam, will commemorate International Day of Tolerance under the theme Embrace Yourself, Embrace Others through Performances this afternoon.

The day is commemorated on November 16 and the theme will encourage poetry that celebrates the rich diversity of Zimbabwean cultures, promote a spirit of tolerance, acceptance and understanding between people of different backgrounds and walks of life among others issues.

“Despite the immense challenges and divisions, we have faced and continue to face as individuals and communities, the International Day of Tolerance encourages us to learn to accept each other and reject negative attitudes which divide and destroy our country,” said the event coordinator Dennis Madyira.

Madyira said this monthly showcase had grown into one of the most prominent spoken-word and poetry events in Harare.

Its features both acclaimed poets and fresh young poets, some of which will be presenting their work for the very first time.

He described it as a “critical movement” of performance poets who have made an impact artistically and brought to the fore the voices of young people of Zimbabwe.

“The House of Hunger Poetry Slam has been a constant platform for exposure and growth plus a great networking opportunity with a number of inspiring poets like Chirikure Chirikure, Mutumwapavi, Ticha Muzavazi and Albert Nyathi, among others,” said a numerous time poetry slam winner, Tinashe Tafirenyika.

He said the event had made him a better poet and made him discover more about his artistic abilities.

About 25 poets showcase diverse performances at the House of Hunger Poetry Slam each month and Madyira said participating poets are required to register with the Slam Master before the event starts.
