Magwaza sharpens Squash skills in UK Tour

Magwaza sharpens Squash skills in UK Tour

By Staff Reporter

TOP Zimbabwe squash player, Admire Magwaza is taking part in an enlightening World Open Squash Championships in Britain’s city of Manchester.

Despite the fact that squash is not a very popular sport in Zimbabwe, Magwaza has managed to curve his name into the elite world of squash players.

Squash maestro: Admire Magwaza

This week, The ZimDiaspora caught up with the rising star in Manchester where he is temporarily based. In all the tournaments, Magwaza has strangely been wearing a black band on his arm. He declined to elaborate or explain the reason behind the black band.

The soft spoken sportsman said: “Participating in the World Open Squash Championships has empowered me a lot. It is my hope to take a leaf from this tournament and go back home to train more”.

“I represent Zimbabwe in most international events. I am currently Zimbabwe’s top player and it is my wish to pursue my career which I am enjoying very well,” he said.

“I came to England on the 20th of October to play in the World Open Squash Championships which started on 26th October and expected to end on 3rd of November 2013 at the national squash centre in Manchester,” he said.

Magwaza was however knocked out in the early stages of the competition by Yann Perrin of France by a score line of 3-0 (11-4 11-4 11-9). Before the match, Magwaza says he was confident he would win: “but it just wasn't my day and besides I think I lost to a better experienced opponent as he has been playing on this tour for years and is more exposed to top level of squash”. The eventual winner of the tournament was Nick Matthew of England who overcame Gregory Gaultier of France in the final.

However, Magwaza has been a consistent squash player who is highly rated in his country and Africa as a whole.

“I play consistently in Zimbabwe and Africa and a few of the moments in other continents. l look forward to play more with the top guys in the world to gain experience and the much needed exposure,” he said, adding that he would be in UK for a while to sharpen his squash skills in other upcoming tournaments.

“I feel good being competitive with the best players, it gives me more confidence,” he said.
